Tobacco-Free at Navajo Preparatory School
The TUPAC Program is pleased to feature another contractor, Navajo Preparatory School. Navajo Prep is located in the Farmington area and works closely with Navajo youth and adults. Their interactive programs teach about tobacco prevention, cessation, and secondhand smoke. In early summer, about 80 middle and high school students were given an overview of tobacco addiction, including spit tobacco, use of tobacco by professional athletes, media literacy, and cessation. Rick Bender, known in New Mexico for his Half-off with Tobacco billboards, also spoke to Navajo youth about the hazards of spit tobacco use. Also this past year, Navajo Prep staff and students participated in the Northern Navajo Nation Parade and distributed educational information about secondhand smoke to over 2,000 community members. We applaud your important work in the Northwestern part of the state.
